The US Consumer Confidence Slips

The Americans had great confidence in the United States economy and were sure they were not going to be let down. However, since October 2009 the hopes and expectations are falling because job opportunities still look bleak. Also, holiday shopping this year has been on the quieter side. This is indication that people are not willing to spend their reserves and they are still unsure about the whole economic situation in the country. The index of surety and unsurety has been on a see-saw ever since the whole recession drama began.

Americans’ confidence about the U.S. economy fell unexpectedly in October 2009 as job prospects remained bleak, a private research group revealed recently. This has fueled speculation that an already gloomy holiday shopping forecast could worsen. To spend on goods, consumers need confidence and economists are still to see any confident buyers in the market. The spending patterns of consumers is observed over a period of time without taking into consideration the short term spending. On interviewing people it was learnt that still a lot of people are unsure about their future and how they are going to be spending their holidays in 2009.
